Ooooh! I know! I know! I love St. Thomas More and I know the answer to your question about him! :D

St. Thomas More is patron of lawyers because he was a lawyer, and patron of difficult marriages because of the story behind his two marriages. According to his son-in-law and biographer William Roper, St. Thomas More originally favoured his first wife Jane's prettier younger sister. Then he realised how humiliating it would be for Jane, if her younger sister were married before she was; and so he decided to court her instead! Their marriage turned out to be wonderfully happy.

After Jane's death, St. Thomas More remarried. His second wife, Alice, had also been widowed and had children from her previous marriage. St. Thomas More adopted and raised them as his own. This second marriage wasn't as happy as the first, however, though I don't really know the details.

I hope that helps. :)
